Termite Bait and Monitoring Stations
Every property owner knows that termites (white ants) can cause extensive
damage to their homes or any structure where timber has been used in its
construction.
The important question is; " How do we STOP these destructive pests
from infesting and damaging our properties and causing us thousands of
dollars in repairs for timber replacement?"
Well, there are a number of ways the problem can be approached.
Firstly and very importantly, a full inspection of your house and grounds
including gardens, retaining walls, landscaping timbers and wooden fences
by a fully trained and licensed operator, should be made.
Any sign of termite infestation must be treated immediately.
Australian Government Standards strongly recommends an inspection , at
least every year.
Any discarded timber or wood piles in which infestation is found should
be treated first before removal.
Also, because termites are attracted to areas of high moisture it is important
that drainage around foundations, outside walls, and subfloors be adequate
and leaking taps and hotwater systems be attended to quickly.
Secondly, to minimise the risk of future infestation in the home, a Termicide
Chemical barrier should be constructed around the building. This consists
of digging a trench and then flooding with termicide and then filled with
treated soil. It is important that pathways and driveways be drilled and
termicide injected into the soil below to ensure that the barrier is continuous.
This is an effective method but is expensive and can be rendered ineffective
if the barrier is breached by grass growing over the barrier or coverer
by soil or other material and has to be inspected and maintaned over the
years.
However, there is another proven and less costly defence
method. That is the use of;

On finding termite activity in any of the bait stations a cap is fitted
to the infested station which contains a termite treatment dust called
"Intrigue" which has the effect of preventing the termites from
completing their moult cycle and of renewing their external skeleton.
They become lethargic and it inhibits their ability to combat the growth
of invading fungi on their bodies. All this produces a deadly result for
the termites.
The termites, which enter the bait stations, consume the termicide and
also take some back to the colony and feed it to other termites, which
become infected. The queen stops laying eggs ( up to 3000 per day) and
dies or is killed by her own soldier termites.
The result is the termite colony is destroyed.
This product is not harmful to humans or their pets. "Intrigue"
is not a poison in the general sense in that in inhibits growth in certain
insects which have external skeletons and therefore has no effect on humans.
In fact it is very environmentally friendly.
Murray Waugh installs between 6 and 8 stations at each installation at
specifically chosen shaded places around the garden to be as unobtrusive
as possible.
